A native of Washington, D.C., Michael is the award winning writer and producer of such films as TALK TO ME (FOCUS Features), HALLELUJAH (American Playhouse), and SHE HATE ME (Sony Picture Classics) for Director Spike Lee. His upcoming film THE CAPE ISLAND AFFAIR (Stolen Sky Productions), is a magical romance based on a short story by renowned British novelist, Joanne Harris (Chocolat).
Residing in Manhattan’s culture rich Hell’s Kitchen, Michael has carved out an amazing 35-year career in the entertainment industry, as a star of stage, film and television. Michael is currently starring on Broadway in Wicked as Dr. Dillamond. He has starred as Lance Corporal Dawson in the original Broadway production of A Few Good Men, as the ancient Marius in the vampire romance, Lestat, and in such films as One Fine Day, She Hate Me and 25th Hour. He has made numerous guest star appearances on such TV shows as The Following, The Mysteries of Laura, Law & Order, Ugly Betty, Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and New York Undercover. He also co-starred for six years as Lamar Griffin on CBS-TV’s As The World Turns.
Throughout his career, Michael has worked with some of the greatest talents in the industry, from Elton John and Anne Rice, to Viola Davis and Academy Award winners Denzel Washington and Jamie Foxx.
Michael’s family founded the media empire Radio One and TV One Networks. He is an acclaimed radio broadcaster, having honed his craft by spending several years as the velvet voice host of the AM Quiet Storm on Washington’s WOL-1450 AM, which was the cornerstone purchase of his family’s broadcast ventures.
Michael’s award winning screenplay TALK TO ME portrays the country’s first radio shock jock Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene, an ex-con and his friendship with his manager Dewey Hughes (Michael’s father) during the turbulent 1960’s. The film stars Don Cheadle and Chiwetel Ejiofor and garnered him the NAACP Image award for Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture.
Michael is the author of the inspirational book They Must Not Know Who I Think I Am; Lessons in Defiant Resilience. Filled with heartwarming and insightful personal anecdotes from his long career in entertainment, They Must Not Know Who I Think I Am offers motivation for discovering, applying and reaping the long-term rewards of a defiantly resilient approach to life.
Along with Michael’s Image Award, he is a Eugene O’Neill Playwright’s selectee, the winner of the coveted Kennedy Center Award for New American Plays and a prestigious Sundance Screenwriter’s Selectee for his critically acclaimed jazz fable, PORK PIE.
